Dutch term or phrase: afsplitsing
Simple enough word but I'm not sure what the correct term is in the context. Text is an interview with an arachnologist about his work on the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean.

Could it be "offshoot"? I've come across the term "filiation" in Huitenga's agricultural dictionary but it sounds too much like technical jargon for this job (museum's yearbook intended for the public).

This lot of creepy crawlies certainly seems to be geographically isolated from the "bronsoort" so this gets my vote. Thanks to everyone.

(separate) branch

Explanation:
Isn't that what they call it? Separate branches in the animal kingdom?

agree  writeaway: http://www.austmus.gov.au/palaeontology/research/trilobites0... - maybe possible but you should provide more conclusive refs and give the url of your refs

-> The url is the one you cited above - but it was not meant to be an exact definition, but a kind of illustration of the way in which one might use the phrase 'separate branch'

Explanation:
agree with you. am not 100% it's the only term but it is certainly used in the context.

disagree  Titia Meesters: I understand from the context that this is really a separate species; a subspecies however belongs to the same species which is really a different classification. Also the OED says it is a subdivision of a species which confirms this.
