Hi Klemi,
Despite the question put forward by Nitase, looking at the whole sentence, the phrase to draw out is: "she followed close upon the heels of "(... Gaspard, who had a harassed look about him), which is why I already made mention of the link with "tread upon one's heels". "Upon" does not count as a word on its own here, however the translation can be tweaked to fit in.

Probably, I am wrong and I really will appreciate the time that anybody can take to give me an explanation. Nitase is asking for the meaning of the terms, " follow upon", and not follow close, not for the translation of the phrase or the sentence, and definitely he is not asking for tips in translation. I agree with Ledja's translation of the words "follow close" a hundred per cent, no doubt about it. As always, her valued contribution in this forum is highly appreciated but is Nitase really asking for that phrase or something else?
