I am thoroughly familiar with what you described. The series of mishaps that you narrated have happened to me several times, almost verbatim. It is like a comedy of errors.
Considering that KudoZ is structured as a competitive game, we all need to guard against being sucked into its powerful competitive whirlwind and come to this game with an abundant supply of forbearance. The petulantly competitive behavior we often observe makes it difficult to maintain composure sometimes, but we should make an effort to rise above that nonsense.
I want to explain two points, Concerning what happen with this question, I found a question with no answer then I answered directly without doing any research, and I posted my answer before anyone. I did a quick research then I found that my answer was totally wrong then I wrote the second answer which I feel that it's right. That's why my answer recorded even the last answer while it should be the first one also. When I refreshed my page with the new answer, I discovered all that. But I didn't care a lot because I have already asked to hide my wrong answer before the correction (This the first time to ask for hidden an answer), so I thought even the correction will be hidden. If you noticed dear Mona and Mr.Fuad all the answers spent almost 13 minutes and that time is the exact time for searching and find the right answer or the answer which we think that it is right. So, this is happen if you didn't refresh the page before your answer.
Second point quickly, we are here to help each other. I guess, it's not a war. Even if you feel the other translators made a mistake or used a non professional way, explain that softly. Maybe, they are not familiar with the kudoz rules. Thanks!
. . . or ranking, Marwa, and I don't think I want to know. That is the least edifying aspect of KudoZ. I wish points and ranking didn't exist. I think they bring out the worst in people.
When people post a question, they want to learn something they didn't know. Why can't we find enough satisfaction in simply helping them learn? To me, that is the crux of the matter.
That is why I am turned off by people who don't take the time to research their questions before turning to KudoZ. KudoZ should be the last resort after exhausting all other resources. Without the dirty work of research, translators could never develop their craft. They will remain KudoZ-dependent.
I am most highly motivated to help when a translator has used every tool available but still feels uncertain and has taken the time to explain the nature of their uncertainty. Such translators don't want to use KudoZ as a crutch. They don't want to be spoon-fed. What they need is what we call "spotting" in weight-lifting -- a gentle push to help a fellow practitioner after the practitioner has burned every calorie they could to lift that barbell. This collegial spotting is the one thing that I like about KudoZ.
It is rather what makes sense. If I have an answer that I think is correct but has already been given, It will make no sense to give it again. I should agree with it instead. If I think I can improve it a bit, I can simply add a suggestion. The whole idea is to share knowledge, not only with the asker, but also with the community. If the knowledge I want to share has already been shared, there should be no need to duplicate the effort.
Yes Fuad, I agree with you! It happened to me once and I hid my answer and even agreed with the other. But in general, I don't agree totally with the whole kudoz rules, but I can't complain. And by the way, having the same answer is completely compelling with the rules in fact.
. . . don't lose heart. It happens often that I start composing my answer before anybody else (or so I think), but then as soon as I post my answer, I discover that others have likewise just posted their answers, some slightly before me, others slightly after. All it means is that everybody has been doing the same thing at approximately the same time. I imagine they are just as surprised as I am. And it sure is funny when all the answers are the same.
When I post an answer and then find out that others have already posted the same or nearly the same answer, and their time-stamp is earlier than mine, I hide my answer, because nobody needs to see it. It serves no purpose. Instead, I agree to the earliest answer that I find acceptable, which often is identical to the answer that I tried to post. It if is slightly different and I happen to think that it could be improved, I add a comment with a suggestion to improve the translation, which the asker will be free to take or not, and I never look back. I think everybody should do the same, although experience tells me that few will.
Take heart, Mona. You are a good multilingual translator. Don't let a thing like this sour your day.
I really do not know why they did that; I was the first one to put the answer; I would like to ask the other three: "If you face the same situation, won't you consider it an ill-behavior?"
