Englesk naziv gig economy sastoji se od žargonskog izraza gig, koji se izvorno odnosio na glazbeni angažman (gaža) i imenice ekonomija 'economy'. Ime je nastalo početkom 2009. godine u jeku ekonomske krize I velike nezaposlenosti. Pojavljuje se naziv gig ekonomija. Takva ekonomija se zasniva na činjenici da kompanije zapošljavaju neovisne stručnjake (freelancere) na ograničeno, kratko vrijeme. Takvo zapošljavanje postaje sve popularnije jer je radna snaga sve mobilnija, posao se može obavljati bilo gdje, a radnici mogu birati između privremenih poslova i projekata širom svijeta.
