Englesk naziv gig economy sastoji se od žargonskog izraza gig, koji se izvorno odnosio na glazbeni angažman (gaža) i imenice ekonomija 'economy'. Ime je nastalo početkom 2009. godine u jeku ekonomske krize I velike nezaposlenosti. Pojavljuje se naziv gig ekonomija. Takva ekonomija se zasniva na činjenici da kompanije zapošljavaju neovisne stručnjake (freelancere) na ograničeno, kratko vrijeme.
