Neki akademski krugovi razlikuju anti-utopiju i distopiju. Kao u Orvelovoj Osamdeset četvrtoj i Hakslijevom Vrlom novom svetu, distopija ne pretenduje da bude dobra, dok se anti-utopija predstavlja kao utopija, ili je planirana kao takva, ali je iz nekog razloga utopijski svet uništen ili iskrenut.
