English term or phrase: to be but the hard-pressed captain

It is impossible to decide whether there is really any truth in this account, or whether it springs wholly from the imagination of the Britons, attempting to solace themselves for their national overthrow; but it allows us to believe if we choose that sometime in early sixth century there was a British leader of the name of Arthur, who by military genious rose to high command and for a while beat back the Saxon hordes. At most, however, it should be clearly realized, Arthur was probably only a local leader in some limited region, and, far from filling the splendid place which he occupies in the later romances, *was but the hard-pressed captain* of a few thousand barbarious and half-armed warriors.

Explanation:
Макар че за hard-pressed вероятно може да се измисли и нещо по-добро. Например "затруднен", "в тежко положение" и пр.
Всъщност цялото може да се промени в зависимост от това, къде поставяме ударението. Може да стане примерно "не е бил нищо повече", което принизява героя, или пък "е бил само един", което пък е по-малко снизходително от предложения превод.

Още веднъж благодаря, но аз ще взема за "водач" предложението на Хр.Мечкаров.

Asker: Благодаря! Наташа е права. Според мен "нещо повече" звучи добре. По-добре от "нищо повече", защото така се омаловажава, а да не го принизяваме в "нищото", все пак това е Артур. Пък проблемът не беше само в but.
