石灰岩(石灰石、碳酸钙)锻烧后会有这样的化学反应:CaCO3 → CaO + CO2 前者是“碳酸钙”,后两者分别是“生石灰、氧化钙”和“二氧化碳”。

生石灰加水的化学反应:CaO+H2O→Ca(OH)2 后者是“氢氧化钙、熟石灰”。

可以想象在大自然中,石灰岩风化的土壤很自然会在生石灰和熟石灰之间变化。石灰质的土壤只是钙质土壤的一种,石灰质的土壤当然和钙质的土壤不同。
