A few things I observed:
1. The Baidu definition is from Chinese to English, not from English to Chinese as this post is asking. I do not trust Baidu's Chinese to English suggestions because it is not its strength. I trust more Oxford Dictionary which is more authoritative in Chinese>English.

2. The two Asian websites confuse themselves:
- In the first link about Japan: Trekking as the main heading is translated into 爬山, while trekking as a sub-heading above the route map is translated into 山中漫步。
-- In the second link about Boheydulong Island: the first trekking on the heading is translated into 爬山，while in the text under a photo "one-hour trekking" is translated into 徒步登山。
These inconsistencies clearly show the translators unsure about the meaning of trekking. They are poor examples of translation.

Now after giving the illustrations, you suggest a new translation 徒步露营/远足. It also demonstrates you are unsure about the meaning of trekking. Translating it into 徒步露营, do you think there are 飞行露营，游船露营 or 跑步露营? Trekking requires camping is simply because it usually takes more than one day. Camping isn't the primary purpose in trekking.

You've got it all wrong, I'm afraid.

I honestly don't think my initial translation is correct. It was a sloppy translation. But I must point out the difference between 登山 and 爬山 is not what you think it is. 登山 is the correct translation for mountaineering, perhaps "爬山" is the equivalent for trekking.

Again, just because somebody put it there doesn't mean it is right. The following website is also from Asia:

My point is, since translation mostly depends on the context. Here in a tourist context, 爬山/远足 can not appropriately reflect the connotation of the original words, 爬山/远足无法恰当体现trekking和hiking之间的区别，爬山又和登山极其类似，容易产生误解。so,根据以读者为导向的原则， I suggest 徒步露营/远足 as the translation.

I'm not sure why you think 登山 (Trekking)、远足 (Hiking)、爬山 (Mountaineering) are confusing. I cited a Simplified Chinese website in my suggested answer earlier that uses 登山 for trekking and I now give another site in Traditional Chinese that also uses 登山 for trekking.

I think you tried too hard to give an answer while ignoring the common usage of the term in the tourism and travel industry. Your proposal of 跋涉 isn't right because 跋涉 is a verb often used to "形容旅途艰苦" 《现代汉语词典》. In the context of "tourism and travel", "trekking and hiking" are hobbies or interests that people enjoy as leisure activities. To translate ”trekking“ using a negative connotation in 跋涉 might not suit the context, if not entirely 歧义。

I've never heard of people say for example, "I enjoy trekking in Nepal." and is translated into 我喜欢到尼泊尔跋涉。 Rather it can be translated fittingly well as 我喜欢到尼泊尔登山。

Similarly, it's more common to use an expression like this for the proper use of 跋涉 -- "经过三日两夜的长途跋涉，大家都累透了。"

I'm sure it's easy to understand the difference among these words in English (trekking, hiking and mountaineering). However, the translations (登山、远足、爬山） could be very confusing in Chinese. According to the website (http://mywildearth.com/hiking/trekking-vs-hiking-vs-mountain... trekking is similar to hiking, however, if the translations were correct, then it would look like trekking (登山) is more similar to mountaineering (爬山). And according to the website, trekking is more like "camping" as it involves in a number of days. What's more, the translation "登山" involves "山", while trekking itself doesn't necessarily requires "山", which is why it is easy to be confused with the translation "爬山". I suggest a different translation for these two words. Just because somebody translated it this way doesn't mean it is a correct translation.
