Ik ben bezig met een vertaling voor een producten van haarproducten. In één van deze producten heeft deze het over 'bonds':

Hair is very complex. It is not just a strand that grows from scalp, gets old, and then falls out. There is much more to hair than that. Hair has structure, and within the structure lays the science behind the reaction of hair strands. Each hair strand is made up of several bonds, and each gives our hair strands their unique characteristics.

First, is the hydrogen bond. “Hydrogen bonds account for some of the overall strength of the hair” (Chicoro, 56). It also gives our hair its ability to stretch and go back to its normal state. Hydrogen bonds are extremely weak and can be temporarily changed by heat or water. When you apply heat to the hair, the hydrogen bonds react to the heat, and the hair takes shape of the heat appliance, or you can wet your hair, sit under a dryer, and your hair will from and take shape of the curlers.

Second, are the salt bonds. Salt bonds are also physical bonds “which can be broken by changes in the pH of the hair” (Chicoro, 57). pH is the potential of hydrogen in the hair, and is responsible for the balance within the body and hair. If the pH is too acidic or too alkaline, then it can break down the salt bonds. The salt bonds are able to return to normal, when pH balanced is neutralized.

Third, are the disulfide bonds or cysteine bonds. These are not physical but chemical bonds. “Chemical bonds are stronger than physical bonds, and once they are changed, they cannot be returned to their original state” (Chicoro 57). Chemical relaxers and perms can break down the disulfide bonds causing the hair to permanently straighten or curl. Once the disulfide bonds are broken down, the hair will not revert to its normal state. After these bonds are changed, the hair becomes weak and extremely dry.

Finally, are the peptide bonds. Peptide bonds are also chemical bonds. These “can be broken by hair removers” (Chicoro, 57). Once the peptide bonds are broken, the hair will not return to its normal state

normaliter spreekt van het verbreken/vernietigen (break) van de verbindingen/bruggen

in dit geval wordt 'soften' gebruikt, dat misschien kan worden vertaald 'met minder stevig maakt'

mogelijk hangt dit samen met het lage gehalte aan thioglycolzuur, waardoor er geen volledige werking zou optreden


verder lijkt 'slip' ook met 'gladheid' te kunnen worden vertaald

Moisture Wrap Permanent Wave Booster is een ‘low-thio’ formule die het haar verzacht. Het zorgt voor de gladheid die nodig is om het haar met wikkels in te zetten. 16 oz.

agree  Gerard de Noord: Ja, maar door al dat leeswerk zou je kunnen missen dat kappers meestal spreken over zwavelbruggen en dat bruggen hier het beste antwoord is. //Ik spreek mijn kapper ook maar twee keer per jaar.

neutral  Machteld/Johan Schrameijer/Westenburg: als het over haar gaat van african american mensen, kan het ook nog de aanhechting zijn van het verlengde haar ofwel de weave. Die aanhechtingengen worden'bonded' Als je dat wil permanenten met een wrap zou je die aanhechtingen zeker zachter willen hebben

  -> Machteld, je moet naar de context kijken, dat wil zeggen naar de eigenschappen van die lotion en naar het feit dat het hier gaat om de eigenschappen van het natuurlijke haar.
