Hoewel gevangennemer minder gebruikelijk is, is het neutraler dan gijzelnemer of ontvoerder.
Gijzelhouder kan evt. ook, is vrijwel parallel aan gijzelnemer.
Gaat het hier om een 'gewone gevangene', POW, of een gegijzelde journalist bijvoorbeeld? In het laatste geval is gijzelnemer natuurlijk een prima optie.
