Hele zin:
'Water pressure at the deepest point in the ocean is more than 8 tons per square inch, the equivalent of one person trying to lift 50 jumbo jets'.

Meer een rekenvraag dan een taalvraag, geloof ik, maar omdat ik in mijn vertaling van die 'inch' een 'centimer' wil maken, zou ik graag willen weten wat er dan met die '8 ton' gebeurt.

N.B. Ik weet hoeveel centimer een inch is, dus daar gaat het niet om...

Volgens mijn Desk Companion (The Economist) geldt: 0.984 UK tons = 1 metric ton (1 tonne), en 1 US ton (net or short) = 0.907 metric tons (oftewel tonnes). 1 UK ton is dus 1000/0.984 kg.

Als je uitgaat van UK tons, kun je als volgt omrekenen:
8 tons force / inch2 = 8 x (1000/0.984) x (1/2.54^2) = 1260.17 kgf/cm2

(waarbij inch2 betekent 'square inch', ^ betekent 'tot de macht 2' en kgf betekent 'kilogramkracht').

Als je uitgaat van US tons, kun je als volgt omrekenen:
8 tons force / inch2 = 8 x 907 x (1/2.54^2) = 1124.68 kgf/cm2

hetgeen aardig overeenkomt met de uitkomst van het conversieprogramma van Erik.

neutral  Harry Borsje: ik kom uit op 1240 kg/cm^2 (8000/2,54^2) maar http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-pressureuni.htm geeft jou gelijk - wat mis ik hier? (overigens snap ik dan nog niet hoe je druk kunt vergelijken met het optillen van vliegtuigen à 180 t leeggewicht)
