Dit is wat de Webster ervan zegt: dove: any species of the family Columbidae, especially the smaller species with pointed tails. pigeon: any bird of the family Columbidae having a compact body and short legs esp. the larger species with square or rounded tails.

-------------------------------------------------- Note added at 20 hrs (2011-01-14 17:49:21 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- There are about 3 times as many google hits (images) for "white dove" than there are for "white pigeon". Generally, a pigeon is a dove, but a dove is not a pigeon: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/384 -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 21 hrs (2011-01-14 19:00:59 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Toelichting van de vraagstelster: Je hebt gereageerd op mijn vraag over de vertaling van Dove en Pigeon. Mijn brontekst is de Engelse zin: The Hebrew word 'Yonah' is mentioned twenty three times in scripture meaning 'dove' and ten times referring to 'pigeons.' Maar hieronder het hele gedeelte: Good symbol, that which represents something else, can be used to clarify reason. Symbols are very powerful. For example, when we think about Jesus at his baptism with a dove descending, what do we see? The dove in the Greek is a female word, peristera. This word is used for the rock dove, not the white fluffy-looking creature so often portrayed in paintings, but a rather dull-looking bird, more like our well known wood pigeon. In David Bannerman's 'Birds of the British Isles', he writes, "It is a rock frequenting bird, never perching on trees. It has however been known under special circumstances to alight on water." Apparently the rock dove's natural habitat was the desert, and therefore it is not surprising that this was the creature to alight on the baptised Jesus. Also of interest is its nesting habits; the rock dove delights to frequent inhospitable and dark places, horribly gloomy and forbidding caverns and caves extending far beyond the light of day, where the air smells dank and foul, and the walls are dripping with unwholesome slime. The rock dove delights to frequent such inhospitable and dark places, and there transforms them by turning them into places of life. This, as Michael Mitton writes, "Is no fluffy creature beautifying Christian meetings, but is a rugged creature that delights to transform the desperate and dark places of our broken world, making them places of new life.'65 Poor symbol can cause us to believe we have to clean up our hearts before we can allow this beautiful, white fragile dove/spirit to enter. The truth is that the dove/spirit enters to transform, clean up, change and give life. As I have written, doves were not white as traditionally depicted but birds that made their nests in rocks or holes in the cliff, or sometimes in trees or bushes, The Hebrew word 'Yonah' is mentioned twenty three times in scripture meaning 'dove' and ten times referring to 'pigeons.' The dove was one of the earliest creatures to be domesticated by man and was the poor man's sacrifice, Imagine standing there seeing the Holy Spirit in bodily form descending on Jesus as a dove. Maybe it would denote to you the promise that Jesus had come to be a sacrifice even for the poorest of the poor. |
