Greetings

In our local Iranian church, while almost all the women have their heads totally uncovered, I noticed two women (out of a total of about 50) wearing dupattas (shawls) which were long strips of material which they used to partly cover their hair. It may be that they are Afghans rather than Iranians, I'm not sure.

The way in which the woman on the left of this picture covers her hair is an approximation, although I can find nothing exactly like it on the net:

Please, what do you call it?

Every blessing,

Simon

agree  Jaber Haghighi: Surely the picture shows Shawl. The most common word to describe it in Iran is Shawl.

دوپاتا

Explanation:
if you google دوپاتا you will see a lot of pages talking about it. The one that is used by Iranians is shorter and is called شال. The square scarves are called روسری.

neutral  Jaber Haghighi: Is دوپاتا a well-known equivalent word in Iran! Do we use this word in Farsi? But, we can use the nearest equivalent
9 mins
-> We don't because we don't have such a thing. When we are referring to what Indians wear, we use دوپاتا. We also don't translate ساری because we don't have such a thing in Iran.
