Air sparging is an in situ remedial technology that reduces concentrations of volatile constituents in petroleum products that are adsorbed to soils and dissolved in groundwater. It involves the injection of contaminant-free air into the subsurface saturated zone, enabling a phase transfer of hydrocarbons from a dissolved state to a vapor phase. The air is then vented through the unsaturated zone.

Pohjavettä ilmastetaan, jotta haihtuvien yhdisteiden poistuminen maaperästä nopeutuisi. Pohjaveden ilmastus eli stripping on in situ menetelmä (maata tai pohjavettä siirtämättä), jossa paineistettua ilmaa injektoidaan pilaantuneeseen pohjavesikerrokseen. Ilmakuplat kulkeutuvat maahuokosten välissä pysty- ja vaakasuuntaisesti irrottaen maassa ja pohjavedessä olevia haitta-aineita, jotka ulkeutuvat ilmakuplien tai jatkuvan ilmavirran mukana ylös kohti maan kyllästymätöntä kerrosta. Injektoitavan ilman virtausnopeus pidetään suurena, jotta pohjaveden ja maaperän välinen kontakti kasvaisi ja haittaaineiden irtoaminen tehostuisi. Pohjaveden ilmastuksen ohella käytetään usein huokosilmatekniikkaa poistamaan helposti haihtuvia orgaanisia yhdisteitä kyllästymättömästä kerroksesta.
