A pervious surface is one that allows water to filter into the ground, which enables natural groundwater to recharge, helps with filtration of pollutants, and reduces erosion and flooding. The use of pervious asphalt and concrete for parking lots, roads and sidewalks is an important part stormwater management that conserves precious natural resources.

Läpäiseväksi päällystemateriaaliksi kutsutaan päällystettä, joka läpäisee vettä koostumuksensa ansiosta. Vesi suodattuu päällysteen läpi sen alla olevaan sorakerrokseen ja kiintoaine jää tähän suodattimena toimivaan kerrokseen.
Sorakerroksen alle voidaan asettaa putki, jota myöten hulevedet voidaan johtaa eteenpäin, esimerkiksi jatkokäsittelyyn. Läpäisevä päällyste voidaan rakentaa myös erimuotoisista ja kokoisista betonilaatoista, joiden väliin jää läpäisemätöntä pintaa.
