agree  ohemulen: Sorry, Marju, vasta nyt tajusin kommenttisi. Olen samaa mieltä. IllIä ei voi käyttää ennen substantiivia, mutta adjektiivejä yleensä kyllä voi.

The man was put into a ward. I would have rephrased the beginning anyway, saying "the man who was ill was put into...", or "the sick man". You can BE ill, but ill cannot be used as an adjective in this way.
