Tech/Engineering - Aerospace / Aviation / Space / History of the development of the Aircraft Engine
English term or phrase: power source
Period of dominance by piston engines

Since the early times, our ancestors have dreamt of flying freely like birds. They have tried many ways but more often than not, these trials have failed, as the problem of ****power source**** was not solved.
Initially, some had loaded the aircraft with the specially designed steam engine to try but it failed due to the too heavy weight of the engine.
When the combustion engine was first used in cars at the end of the 19th century, people thought to also use it on aircrafts as its ****power source**** and begin to experiment with it.

neutral  Tony M: Wouldn't really fit in the first occurrence, where we might be talking about man-powered flight, for example. / Not that clearly: "Since early times..." — the 1st occurrence is wide open in terms of time and technology.

  -> this is clearly not about man-powered flight Tony

source d'énergie

Explanation:

Vent (énergie éolienne);
Eau combinée avec la gravité (énergie hydraulique);
Marées et courants marins (énergie marémotrice et hydrolienne)
Énergie solaire (thermique et photovoltaïque);
Combustion (combustible : pétrole, gaz naturel, biogaz, bois, ...);
