I'm translating a marketing brochure for a Scottish salmon raising company, and I came across this phrase, used as an example of responsible environmental stewardship. I don't know enough about fish farming to understand what exactly is meant by it: stocking only one loch at a time?

Est-ce qu’il pourrait s’agir d’un système d’ensemencement par lac individuel ? Donc pas nécessairement d’un seul lac, mais un système synchronisé où l’on n’ensemence qu’une génération par lac individuel avant de le mettre en “jachère” pour un temps, le but étant d’éviter la transmission des parasites d’une génération à l’autre. Pour répondre à votre question, je pense qu’on peut dire “ensemencement par baie individuelle” (puisqu’on parle de “gestion par baie individuelle”) qui couvrirait lac, fjord, baie, anse, etc mais là on s’éloigne un peu du “loch” écossais… ce qui n’est peut-être pas grave si c’est clair dans le contexe qu’il s’agit des lochs. Ou alors les deux: “ensemencement par baie/loch individuel”. On ne vous reprochera sans doute pas d’être trop précis.

Not exactly right, but your answer was well researched and helpful. After explanations from the client, the term actually means that they stock all the sections of a loch at the same time, so that after harvesting, there is a period of time where the whole loch can stay fallow. So I translated it as “empoissonnement synchronisé par loch”, as the stocking of all the parts of each loch is done synchronously.

Asker: Je pense que vous avez raison, et vous avez mieux cherché que moi, car mon document concerne justement la « Scottish salmon company » ! Les explications dans les documents restent laconiques, mais on comprend déjà un peu mieux. En tout cas, il s'agit bien d'un ensemencement de plusieurs lochs, mais peut-être pas en même temps. Je me demande quand même pour le mot loch. Car je ne suis pas sûr que ce soit simplement un lac, il semblerait que ce soit plutôt une zone maritime délimitée (car il est question de « sea loch » dans le document), et j'ai vu certains documents français utiliser le mot tel quel, mais pour le coup, je ne suis pas sûr ce qui serait le mieux…
