A l'origine, il y avait une grande forêt entre le lac Yamanaka et le Mont Fuji, les coulées de lave de celui-ci sont venues coucher les arbres, dans un premier temps. Dans une seconde opération, la lave n'étant plus à sa température la plus élevée s'est moulée autour de ses arbres. la phase finale fût que les arbres se sont consumés pour laisser des tubes creux, où l'on peut observer par endroit encore l'écorce ou divers feuillages."
