English term or phrase: stepped responses
In some bidding situations, one partner essentially asks a question and the other has a choice of stepped responses.
For example, a bid of 4NT asks partner how many Aces they have and a 5C reply typically means "no aces", 5D means "one ace", 5H means "two aces", 5S means "three aces". How would one describe this?

"Palier" is used for the level of the "enchère" e.g. "les enchères aux paliers dépassant le palier de 2" but that doesn't seem quite right here.

réponses par paliers
Explanation:
il s'agit de réponses du partenaires ou seul le palier est signifiant parce que ce sont uniquement des réponses à des questions (conventionnelles) posées par le demandeur.

Asker: Thanks Odile. Yes, definitely an option - your link describes exactly the situation I was describing. I'm going to go with paliers though as probably more usual.
