English term or phrase: trade box
An amazing number of Pacific Islanders travelled away on ships, learnt about the “west”, saw other worlds and came home with skills, stories of distant islands and tales of opportunity for young men and women. They also tried to return with a “trade box” of goods. The historian David Chappell calls these workers and adventurers transculturites because they voyaged back and forth across cultures.

Context : relating first encounters between Pacific islanders an europeans in 16th to 18th century.

Although I quite understand the meaning I am having ahard time finding a good translation/explanation for it.

Thanks for your help.

trade box of goods
un lot de marchandises commerciales

Explanation:
It's not easy to translate "box" in this context without risking perhaps a misinterpretation. You can avoid the caveat by expressing the main idea of TRADE, and 'box' can be rendered by 'a lot of'.
That way, you remain general, and you'll be playing it safe.

They also tried to return with a “trade box” of goods.

Ils ont aussi essayé de revenir avec un lot/un tas de marchandises commerciales.
OR simply >> "..... revenir avec DES marchandises commerciales".
Problem solved.
