j'ai l'habitude de traduire 'infamous' par 'tristement célèbre' ou qq chose dans le genre.

Une idée - c'est vrai que "infamous" a une connotation négative, mais dans ce contexte "tristement célèbre" ne marche pas très bien.

If the term is indeed what is to be translated. "Infamous", here, has nothing to do with their relationship, however triste it may have been (apparently not too, as they had kids). It qualifies Cleopatra, so there is no reason not to translate "infamous" directly. (Robert Collins page 1440)
