English term or phrase: to perlustrate
I'm looking for a translation of the verb "to perlustrate", which means "to look for" or "to inspect with care". I guess this word is old english, thus I need to find a French word that is not in use anymore, that was used in the Middle Ages for example.
The word appears in this sentence: "you need to perlustrate the snake..." in a sort of riddle, which is why I need to find an old fashioned word.

Je propose ce terme parceque vous voulez un mot ancien qui ne soit plus usité. Le dictionnaire La Curne (XIIIè-XVIè) donne pour première acception :Scrutiner. [1° Réfléchir : " Ceulx qui jusques au fons de la besoigne scrutinoient. " (Froiss. XIII, p. 279.] - " Subtile chose estoit à rendre raison, dont ce pouoit venir, non pourtant Norgal ne s'en souvenoit point à se scrutiner. " (Percef. V, p. 72.) et à "Scrutine" on trouve :Scrutine. [1° Examen : " Pour grant scrutine et investigation faites par nous. " (Ord. IX, p. 202, an. 1407.)]. En outre, le mot est très proche de l'anglais "scrutinize" et tous les termes de la même famille (voir l'OED). En français comme en anglais l'origine est latine, "scrutari". Si on pourrait utiliser "scruter", mais ce mot n'est pas à proprement parler obsolète.
