English term or phrase: state meet
- I saw you with your son up at the state meet.
- I thought he should have won the all-around.
- Well, so did I. He'll probably win it this year, huh?

concours régional
Explanation:
A competition held at the level of a [U.S.] state, where players/teams come from all over the state to compete. I would avoid the use of the word "Etat", however, to stay closer to the spirit of the term.

Or it could be an Australian state, but the same applies.

A different term than "concours" could be used if we knew what sort of sport/game was being referred to.

"Compétition régionale" should do it for most sports...

neutral  Claire Chapman: If this is US, there are district meets and/or regional meets before you get to the state meet.//If you call a state meet "régional," what would you call a regional meet?

-> I'm not sure I understand how this makes a difference... // You don't call the regional meet ANYTHING, this is a TV/movie script, it doesn't mention the regional meet.
