Explanation:
I don't know how to express this properly in FR, but that's the general idea: one that "doesn't do well" — is perhaps sickly, prone to illness, doesn't fatten properly, is underweight...

I don't think it is directly linked to food, but it certainly means that the poor animal may not derive as much benefit from what it eats as others do.
