Le carbone existe à l'état pur, principalement sous deux formes allotropiques, qui sont différentes formes cristallisées d'une même espèce chimique. Ces allotropes sont le diamant, qui cristallise dans le système cubique, et le graphite, qui cristallise dans le système hexagonal.

En 1985, une troisième forme de carbone a été synthétisée: le fullerène ou footballène, un cristal moléculaire composé de 60 atomes de carbone. Les variétés dites amorphes sont formées de monocristaux de même structure que le graphite.
