Nice research Eric! I've become so used to modern methods, I'd never even stopped to think how a graduated calibration 'wedge' would originally have been made! The reason behind the use of the term 'coin' is now clear (or at least, has neutral density!)<br><br>Thanks so much for solving the mystery and satisfying my curiosity!

I still don't think it should be used here<br><br>As for gamme de densités, I would rather use it for step tablet, in this particular context, but I'm not 100% sure.<br><br>I believe we're lacking context to make a final choice

That's very helpful. Regarding the comment in your answer, I feel sure that here comparison and calibration are being used interchangeably as synonyms, so I don't think there's any concern about maintaining the (spurious) distinction in FR.

I think your sensitometric strip idea is right, though I am a little concerned at how few Ghits it seems to get???

'Gradin' was new to me too; it must have come from somewhere, and appears in more than one context in GDT; I wonder if that too is a Canadianism? Also seems to date from quite some time ago, perhaps it has fallen out of use.<br><br>I note that GDT also lists 'gamme de densités' for 'step wedge'; at least that is accurately explicit, even if it isn't perhaps the 'proper' term!

I find also that "coin" is weird in that context, but Termium and GDT report it, maybe it's a canadianism?<br>As for gradin, I never heard it. When I was in the photoprocessing business, we used "bande sensito" (for a scale on paper), "test sensito" (for a scale on film) or even "sensito" (for both)...
