English term or phrase: yields and strains
je suppose que "to strain" signifie "se tendre", mais "yields" ??

the material is resiliently resistive to both compression set and compression to a sufficient extent that saiid material yields and strains in compression to acomodate separation of said first edge and second edge from each other

atteint sa limite élastique et se déforme
Explanation:
These are really two different questions. Also, the words seem to be in the wrong order, since the material will strain quite a lot before yielding!
It's nothing to do with folding or bending though, and "se tendre" is not right because it specifies that the material is subjected to compression (i.e. being pushed not pulled).

C'est le sens, mais selon la nature du procédé ou des matériaux il pourrait y avoir de meilleurs choix

se contracte et se détend, etc.
