English term or phrase: "knob-cheese"
He took a nice long drink. “People like that, they think they want to help. They pretend to be nice, so they feel better. He thought he was better than us. I didn’t want to prove the knob-cheese right.”

“Are all people knob-cheese?” Adriana asked out of the quiet.

“No, not all. Most are, they are born knob-cheese and will do whatever they can to better their lot at the expense of others. A few like me, we are born good, but the other knob-cheeses wear us down so much we turn into a knob-cheese to protect ourselves from them. And a very small few never get worn down.” Jinx smiled, rather satisfied with his answer.
“And all the knob-cheeses go to Torment when they die?”

neutral  Tony M: Quite different from the literal meaning — and I'm not sure if the colloquial sense is quite the same?

Lèche-bottes me semble plus approprié, effectivement.

neutral  Daryo: That would the description of a person willing to lick "knob-cheese", not of person being described themselves as comparable to "knob-cheese".

agree  Daryo: that's for sure in the right direction, but possibly too mild // not coarse enough. Can't find enough samples of people being called "knob-cheese" to get a precise idea of the "nuance of meaning", but it does sound like s.o. being real nasty.

-> Too mild, do you mean not slangish or coarse enough ?! you can replace by "étron".
