wrestle est dans ce cas-ci s'attaquer à. Pour ce qui est de wrestle to the mat : cette forme figée se prête mal à rendre l'idée en français. Le tapis de l'abstraction serait un peu contradictoire, car rien de moins abstrait qu'un tapis. Aussi je pencherai vers une formulation plus générique telle que « sur le plan conceptuel ».

In that frame of mind, it should be démolir des idées. But I think FX Fraipont solution is even more idiomatic.

neutral  B D Finch: If you wrestle an opponent to the mat, you win points by getting them on the floor. So, it's not just "s'attaquer à", but vaincre.// Wrestling isn't a blood sport: you're not meant to kill your opponent!

  -> vaincre une idée would mean that the battle is over, but the adversary is not dead yet. Some people still believe that evolution doesn't exist. So I think FX Fraipont's solution "éprouver les idées à l'aune de l'abstraction" is better and quite elegant
