Notes to answerer
Asker: c'est bien dans ce sens, comme l'indique la suite de la phrase : "requiring little if any questioning or conscious thought"

disagree  Tony M: Yes, but this subtly changes the sense from the s/t: the key point here is that they EXPERIENCE it as something that is simply taken for granted. Changing the verb and subject in this way changes the message.

pour acquis

Explanation:
I think this is one of the standard wys of expressing it, although it may be slightly harder to work into the sentence structure as it stands with 'experience', which will probably be necessary to do in FR. I wonder if 'comme acquis' mightn't be better — except that there is a danger of changing the meaning: that my homosexualiy is acquired rather than innate!
Linguee has a number of suggestions, some of which might give you some other ideas:

I think you can use 'acquis' — which I'm convinced is the most apposite term here — as long as you phrase the rest of it in such a way as to clear the ambiguity. Perhaps something like:

« Dans leur vecu ... est tenu pour acquis » or « La pluprat des... vivent une orientation tenu pour acquis »

I think using a construction such as with 'tenu pour...' immediately removes the ambiguity introduced by using 'comme' instead.

And IMHO it is very important to retain the subject (la plupart des hétéros) rather than turn it round so as to make 'orientation' the subject, which subtly but importantly changes the meaning, or at least the emphasis.

This is a subject very close to my own heart...

Comme une évidence

Explanation:
La plupart des hétérosexuels ressentent leur "orientation" sexuelle comme une évidence.
Ou pour reprendre la proposition de Germaine : "comme allant de soi". En fait je préfère cette deuxième solution.
