The importance of such thin oxide layers present on the surface of metals under reaction conditions has already been pointed out in other contexts, where it was found that their chemical properties may differ substantially from that of the corresponding bulk oxides [5]. In case of ZnO this question is particularly interesting, since in recent work thin layers of ZnO have been shown to adopt a depolarized, graphitic structure [6-9], ZnO(gr), different from the Wurtzite-type bulk.

Since it is difficult to discriminate between Cu and Cu+ on the basis of XPS data, also the corresponding results from Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) are shown. For the clean brass (111) substrate the data reveal a Zn atom concentration of 5 %, clearly lower than the 10 % expected from the bulk Cu/Zn ratio.

Hier wird zwar zwischen Oberflächen(schicht-)anteil und Haupt-/Gesamt-Massen/Volumen-(Rest-)Anteil unterschieden, bulk hier aber nach dem Vorschlag von Niels Stephan als Volumenanteil zu übersetzen, halte ich für nicht gerade unmissverständlich, auch wenn das auch z.B. in http://dict.leo.org/forum/viewUnsolvedquery.php?idThread=932... so nahegelegt wird.

Für den Fall, dass der Fragesteller sich doch für Volumenanteil entscheidet, möge Niels Stephan doch bitte seinen Vorschlag als Antwort, nicht nur als Diskussionsbeitrag, eingeben, damit man ihm den Vorrang zugestehen kann.
Ich hasse die Abarbeitung von Fragestellungen in Diskussionsbeiträgen, das ist weder Fisch noch Fleisch, eine zaghaft (manchmal sogar feige) hingeworfene Bemerkung, mit der man nicht ordentlich arbeiten kann, manchmal dem Anschein nach sogar deswegen, weil der Beitragende Prügel in Form eines disagrees befürchtet :-(
