English term or phrase: Reach
Hallo,

It would be efficient to disable the element with the higher “reach” (Diameter plus Offset) setting first (lower current), and test the lower reach setting operation, since the higher reach setting operation can be tested without disabling the lower setting.

The level of current at which pickup operation is to be expected for an individual setting is determined as follows:
Define “reach” as R ohms = (P ohms + O ohms) [O, usually set at zero ohms],
For Line-Ground configuration, define “current” as I = ((Selected Voltage) R ohms).

Danke für die Hilfe!

German translation:größerer Bereich
Explanation:

reach
Distanz / Impedanz

Explanation:
The text may relate specifically to a distance relay (DE Distanzschutzrelais) — or testing of such a device.

"Reach of Distance Relay: A distance relay is set to operate up to a particular value of impedance; for an impedance greater than this set value the relay should not operate. This impedance, or the corresponding distance is known as the Reach of [a] Distance Relay." [emphasis added —DIV]
http://www.eeeguide.com/reach-of-distance-relay/

"A distance relay is said to under reach when the impedance seen by relay due to fault is more than the relay setting value even though the fault point is within the protected zone of line."
https://electricalbaba.com/under-reach-of-distance-relay/

Also known as an impedance relay.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protective_relay#Distance_rela...

"Impedance" (DE "Impedanz") is a measure of the opposition to flow of electrical current, and is measured in ohms.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_impedance
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impedanz
It is NOT identical to "resistance" (DE " Wirkwiderstand" or "Resistanz"), even though that is also measured in ohms.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_resistance_and_cond...

Linguee has one example with "Stufenimpedanzen", but there are few other instances of this word online.
"Setting the distance reach of the relay is carried out by means of switches on the front panel."
https://www.linguee.com/english-german/search?source=auto&qu...

As Yvonne Manuela Meissner has picked up on, the source text appears to use "reach" in two different ways: firstly to describe a physical measurement, and secondly to describe the impedance. (Which accords with my first quotation, above.)

For the first instance I am 'guessing' that "Distanz" may be appropriate.
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distanzschutzrelais#Distanzmes...

But note:
Ibidem

For the second instance it seems reasonable to base the translation on "Impedanz", perhaps with some attached modifier as in "Stufenimpedanz", "Impedanzniveau", et cetera.

Notice that the source text uses the simple descriptor "current" in the final line of the excerpt, which suggests to me that "Impedanz" alone may suffice.

~~~
By the way, one needs to be careful not to use terminology that — by convention — has already been assigned a special meaning. For example, I was on the cusp of suggesting "charakteristische Impedanz" as another option — but this may be read as meaning something quite unrelated to the present application, and hence is probably unsuitable herein.
Here's one of the other occurrences of "Stufenimpedanz":
"Der Schutz eines vorgegebenen Leitungsabschnittes wird durch einen 3-stufigen Distanzschutz mit folgenden Kenngrößen realisiert (Tabelle 1, Bild 1). Berechnen Sie die für die Ermittlung der Z-t-Auslösekennlinie benötigten Stufenimpedanzen Z."
It's not clear to me exactly what the above-mentioned Bild 1 depicts.
