In this case, Klaus is also right to question "iks." You can pronounce it both ways (as evidenced by Oxford), you just should to stick to one version.

If you and Klaus are interested: We had a discussion about "via" at home. My better half was convinced that there is only one way to pronounce it. But then I pulled up those two dictionaries:

Achso, ich meinte eigentlich nicht die Lautschrift, sondern die Audiobeispiele. Manchmal sind Vokale ja nicht unbedingt genau einem Lautzeichen zuzuordnen, beosnders wenn sie so ähnlich sind wie e und i.

Pons Online-Wörterbuch hatte ich nachgesehen, auch Langenscheidt und in meinem alten Wildhagen, den ich sehr schätze. Sie alle gaben "iks" an. Was mich irritierte war, dass dict.cc "eks" angibt. Deshalb hatte ich gefragt.

Anytime. I just would like to add one example from the last link quoted:
"The sound /ɒ/ does not occur in American English, and words which have this vowel in British pronunciation will instead have /ɑː/ or /ɔː/ in American English."

I am part of a DE-US household and I can tell whether the person talking on TV is German. Mostly, it's because the stress on syllables is wrong, the pronunciation is too hard, and similar.

In your case, he or she might say "extra" like a German would (only the fourth of the Oxford examples, a US one, could be a match then), put too much stress on it and make it sound too "tidy" (which would also not work with the fourth one).

Generally speaking, the question is hard to answer. It really depends on what EN variant and region you're looking for, e.g., what if US=Germany / UK=Austria / Australia=Switzerland and an ENS asks you how to pronounce the word in German? Tough assignment.

If you look closely, you'll see that the given link has exactly the same phonetic symbols for UK and US (!), although the sound files do not match.
