Τους δώσαμε τα φώτα και μείναμε στα (μαύρα τα) σκοτάδια
is the older version I'm familiar with.
Τους δώσαμε τα φώτα και μείναμε με τα καντηλάκια
is the version Fiada translates.

We occasionally say "τα φώτα του πολιτισμού" (the light of civilization).
