I had been to the canteen of Nehru Science Center, Mumbai where I read the translation of Wash Basin is धावन पात्र (Dhawan Paatra) in Hindi. Awfully, I never thought about these words. What is your opinion?

धावन पात्र - इस शब्‍द के अगर अर्थ में जायें तो वास्‍तव में यह एक संस्‍कृतनिष्‍ठ शब्‍द है और धावन का अर्थ होता है धोना। इस लिहाज से अर्थ सटीक है। आपको अटपटा इसी कारण लगा होगा क्‍योंकि आम बोलचाल की हिंदी में आपने यह शब्‍द नहीं सुना होगा और वाश-बेसिन शब्‍द अंग्रेजी से आया है और इसी रूप में यह हिंदी में भी प्रचलित है तो बेहतर है कि हम इसके लिप्‍यंतरण का हिंदी में भी प्रयोग करें और यदि शब्‍द का अर्थ विस्‍तार से लिखना होता हम इसे मुँह-हाथ धोने का पात्र या बरतन भी लिख सकते हैं।

agree  C.M. Rawal: वाश-बेसिन ठीक है. मुँह-हाथ धोने का पात्र तो कोई भी हो सकता है परंतु उसका अर्थ वाश-बेसिन नहीं होगा क्योंकि आधुनिक अर्थ में इसका अभिप्राय दीवार के साथ लगे एक ऐसे स्थिर पात्र से है जिसमें प्रायः नल की टूंटी और जल निकासी का पाइप भी लगा होता है.

संजीव जी के उत्तर से मैं सहमत हूँ। बस कुछ विकल्प और प्रस्तुत कर रहा हूँ। और यह भी कि, धावन पात्र के स्थान पर प्रक्षालनी, चिलमची लिखा होता तो अधिक ठीक होता।

neutral  C.M. Rawal: वाश-बेसिन को आप वाश बेसिन या वाशबेसिन किसी भी तरह लिखें तो ठीक है. परंतु प्रक्षालनी या चिलमची का अर्थ वाश-बेसिन नहीं हो सकता क्योंकि ये ऐसे स्थिर पात्र नहीं होते जिनमें पानी की टूंटी और निकासी का पाइप आदि लगा हो, भले ही ये सभी प्रक्षालन के काम आ सकते हैं.

  -> माफ़ कीजिएगा रावल जी, आपके "स्थिर पात्र" वाले तर्क से मैं पूरी तरह असहमत हूँ। wash-hand basin अब "स्थिर पात्र" होने लगे, लेकिन पात्र "अस्थिर या चलायमान" हो तो क्या उसे वाश बेसिन नहीं बोलेंगे। प्रक्षालनी और चिलमची स्थिर या अस्थिर दोनों हो सकते हैं
