Ugyanakkor létezik (és meglehetősen elterjedt) a mikrotranzakcióknak egy olyan válfaja is, amely ún. lootboxok (egyfajta virtuális doboz, magyarul szó szerint „zsákmánydoboz”) megvásárlására irányul, amelyeket „kinyitva” azokból véletlenszerűen különböző virtuális javakat szerezhetünk meg. Tulajdonképpen tehát nem másról van szó, mint a zsákbamacska 21. századi, digitalizált változatáról. A lootboxok a játékosok számára várhatóan hasznos tárgyakat – így pl. különleges fegyvereket, játszható karaktereket, képességeket erősítő eszközöket – rejtenek, amelyek véletlenszerűen és változó gyakorisággal találhatók meg az egyes lootboxokban.
