| Reference: Revised English Reference information: "I am not the founder but I am next in line to succeed the company." has already been identified as not being correct formal English. However, the suggestions to amend this sentence to "I am not the founder but I am next in line to succeed to the company." are not appropriate, for two reasons: (1) the phrase "to succeed to" is not a very common phrase, and is typically used in only conjunction with royalty; (2) even then, the thing which is "succeeded to" is not the domain/realm, but rather the role/title/position (and most especially "the throne"). https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/succeed to https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/succeed So this is appropriate: "The princess succeeded to the throne." But these are not: "The princess succeeded to Denmark." "The academic succeeded to Senior Lecturer." "I am not the founder but I am next in line to succeed the founder [i.e. the current leader] of the company."
