Non sono un astronomo, ma non mi convince il collegamento del termine con il resto della frase, a causa del successivo "such as". Infatti, ciò che viene dopo non sembra avere nulla a che fare con dei solchi, e mi aspetterei più un "or", o "as well as" anziché un "such as".

agree  Alfredo Tutino: Si - non è un termine tecnico ma una metafora, come si capisce dal fatto che si parla di "lives" delle galassie (che ovviamente non sono esseri viventi; si può dire che hanno una vita solo in senso metafoirico).
