Malattia acuta, causata da un virus appartenente al genere Coronavirus, simile all'agente eziologico responsabile della sindrome respiratoria acuta grave (SARS). Trasmesso all'uomo da dromedari e cammelli, il virus provoca sintomi, che compaiono nei 5-14 giorni successivi al contagio, costituiti da febbre, tosse, brividi e dolori muscolari, e in un terzo dei casi da diarrea, vomito e dolore addominale; nei casi più gravi può svilupparsi polmonite e insufficienza respiratoria, con un tasso di mortalità pari a circa un terzo degli individui colpiti.
