English term or phrase: the more
RIF: What keeps the fear at bay is texts of scripture. He recites: "The eternal God is my refuge." "I am the resurrection and the life." James the man was ambivalent about the existence of God, and he has been called a humanist. But I think his fascination with what he came to call "the more" – coupled to the fact that in his crises and work alike he was obsessed by spiritual questions – demands that we think of him as a religious person. He described writing the Varieties as "my religious act".
