English term or phrase: superintendents
Ciao a tutti,

"His greatest fault was exerting full control over the police force, refusing any autonomy to the assistant commissioner or the superintendents."

Grazie,
Elena

a superintendent is below assistant commissioner in the ranking system

The rank system within the Metropolitan Police Service is slightly different, and is as follows (ending with the highest ranking):

Constable
Sergeant
Inspector
Chief Inspector
Superintendent
Chief Superintendent
Commander
Deputy Assistant Commissioner
Assistant Commissioner
Deputy Commissioner
Commissioner
