English term or phrase: a sign of exclusive recognition
From an early date... another opportunity of collective identification was created. It was founded in the position of the court artist. From the role of court artist a mentality emerged which affected both the isolation of the creative ingenium and the binding character of its claims.....The flipside of this rise was the dependence on acts of grace and the whims of rulers and entanglement in the rivalries of authorities and ranks. ...Many self-portraits tell us about these conflicts between status, duty and inclination. .... Thus family, group ethos and friendship are given their own weight completely in the 17th century, while love and political comradeship had to wait until the 19th. *A sign of exclusive recognition* that remained constant over the centuries sometimes with an almost legendary aura, was the dialogue between the artist and the ruler.

Explanation:

Explanation:

Explanation:

Explanation:

Explanation:
- I believe that “dialogue” in this case is an unspoken (as well as a spoken) give-and-take understanding between the artist and ruler through the centuries. That is, the understanding of the whims, friendships, idiosyncrasies, etc. amongst each other.

- I believe that “sign” in this case means a “manifestation”, “indication”, “a sure sign” as in: 表現、現われ, 兆候, 証拠.

- “Exclusive” in this case means something special that is “not shared with others” or is “just something understood amongst each other.”

- “Recognition” means an understanding or awareness as in “認識.”
[You still have only a superficial understanding of it.] (Sample sentence from Shogakukan J-E Dictionary)

- Of course, in this case, the認識is very deep between the artist and the ruler.

-> Oh dear, is it? I was unaware. I've seen it used a lot online. I'm trying to express "special" in a way that "separates." Perhaps 特権的 would be better. I was also thinking 排他的 (to the exclusion of all other and just between artist and ruler. Better?
