惑星Ｘをテーマにした本を訳しています。
新型の掘削機を使って避難施設を作るというくだりです。
agatizeというのは、「瑪瑙のようにする」と辞書にありますが、ここでは、「掘削する」のような意味なのかな、と思うのですが、確信が持てません。この部分全体の意味も

「この装置が掘削しなかった運搬作業用トンネルの残存物を取り除くために、作業員は横方向のシャフトの一方の面に縦向きに穴を開けて巻き上げ装置を使った」と訳してみたのですが、チェッカーから、「要再考」とされてしまいました。アドバイスいただけたらと思います。

イメージなのですが、掘削機を使うと、表面に瑪瑙のような層状の模様・凹凸が通常はでき、出来ていない場合は”workers would bore vertical holes to one side of the lateral shaft and use hoists.”なのでは、と思います。
