Explanation: This seems to be a Canadian thing. You can use a spouse's last name after marriage without legally changing your birth name. I can't seem to find a set translation, so perhaps something like this just explaining it would work. See the reference for more details. "assumption" as a way of changing name It might be referring to "assumption of a name" as it appears with deed poll and change-of-name. Since a change of name through marriage is already included in the first sentence and the second sentence says "via any other means," this term will be about the use of other people's name. http://ejje.weblio.jp/content/僭称 |

Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_change |

\"assumption\" as a way of changing name 親族からの名前の承継 Explanation: 家系調査サービス(a genealogical service)からの手紙なので、Assumption は「父母、祖父母、親族などの名前を受け継ぐ」こと。 |

Reference: FYI Reference information: WHEN A LEGAL CHANGE OF NAME IS NOT REQUIRED After marriage, you can choose to continue using your own surname, or you can start using your spouse’s surname. Using your spouse’s surname does not represent a legal change of name but is considered a legal assumption of name under Section 3 of the B.C. Name Act. Where an individual has assumed a spouse’s surname and decides to return to their original surname at a later date, they do not need to apply for a legal change of name. http://www.vs.gov.bc.ca/forms/trans-broch-chng-name-eng.pdf |
