　ソフトウェアまたはハードウェアについて、新版が旧版のデータやハードウェアなどを利用できること。たとえば、後方互換性のあるワードプロセッサーは旧版の文書ファイルを読み書きでき、後方互換性のある光ディスクプレーヤーは旧規格の光ディスクを再生できる。
　逆に、新版のデータやハードウェアなどが旧版でも使えることを前方互換性という。
　類似の用語に上位互換性／下位互換性があるが、これは上位機種と下位機種についての同様の関係をいう。この場合、上位（下位）互換性は上位（下位）機種が下位（上位）機種に対して持つ互換性をいう。「上方（下方）」互換性ではなく「上位（下位）」互換性である点に注意。ただし、用法に混乱が見られるという指摘がある。
