strength, loyalty and hope Vis, fides, spesque/δύναμις πίστις ἐλπίς τε Explanation: In good (classical) Latin one lists a series of such words either without a copulative conjunction, or with the copulative conjunction repeated, or with the enclitic copulative conjunction -que appended to the last. Thus, one could say Vis, fides, spes Vis et fides et spes Vis fides spesque. A series of the type 'Vis, fides (or fidelitas), et spes' is post-classical, indeed Mediaeval. The corresponding Greek would be δύναμις πίστις ἐλπίς δύναμις καὶ πίστις καὶ ἐλπίς δύναμις πίστις ἐλπίς τε. Punctuation, breathings, accents, and lower cases letters are not ordinarily used in Greek and Latin inscriptions, of which tattoos might justly be considered a variety, capitals being used instead. Thus, in Latin VIS FIDES SPESQVE and in Greek ΔΥΝΑΜІΣ ΠΙΣΤΙΣ ΕΛΠΙΣ ΤΕ. |
