probitas, iustitia, fidelitas Explanation: You can also translate 'justice' as 'justicia'. HTH. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs (2008-09-08 04:28:47 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- These words also have cognates in English but most of them sound "old-fashioned" to a modern English speaker. To put it simply, "cognates" are words that have a similar (or identical) sound AND a similar (or identical) meaning in two or three or more languages. For example, the English cognate for 'probitas' would be 'probity' which is a synonym for 'honesty'. One of the English cognates for 'iustitia' / 'justicia' / 'justitia' would be 'justice' (obviously, if you look at the meaning and spelling) and the cognate for 'fidelitas' would be 'fidelity' (another word for loyalty). For your convenience I will list some references here that will both support and illustrate my point, they give both the meanings of the words and their etymology (word history): probity http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/probity justice http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/justice fidelity http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fidelity loyalty http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/loyalty I really hope this helps you. Good luck. |
