Since independence in 1957 to 1981, three statesmen became prime ministers of Malaysia. Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al Haj was the first Prime Minister (1957 - 1970), Tun Abdul Razak bin Dato\' Hussien was the second Prime Minister (1970 - 1976) and Tun Hussien bin Dato\' Onn was the third Prime Minister (1976 - 1981).
The three former prime ministers were from eminent families. Tunku Abdul Rahman was prince, son of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halimshah. Tun Abdul Razak was eldest son of Dato\' Hussien bin Mohd. Taib of Pahang while Tun Hussien was the eldest son of Datuk Onn bin Jaafar, founder of UMNO.

Backed by high academic qualifications in law and economics they served in civil service before entering politics. The three former prime ministers were strong nationalists with high political acumen.

The three former prime ministers, have since died. The nation has lost three prominent statesmen who had led the country to growth and prosperity.
