Reference: National Group Awards

Reference information:
Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Awards
Three main groups of qualifications are awarded by the SQA – National Qualifications, Higher National Qualifications and
Scottish Vocational Qualifications. Higher National qualifications are the most common FE qualifications and are offered at
Scotland’s colleges.
National Qualifications
National Qualifications are normally taken by students at secondary school and adult learners in college and are at levels 3 to
6 on the SCQF. National Qualifications comprise the following:
» National Units are the building blocks of National Courses and Group Awards.
» National Courses are usually made up of three National Units with external assessment (exam, project or portfolio).
National Courses are available at various levels: Access 1, Access 2 and Access 3, Intermediate 1 and 2 and Highers
and Advanced Highers. Highers are normally needed for entry into college to study on Higher National Certificate or
Higher National Diploma courses or university to study on a degree course.
» National Group Awards are built up from National Units. Group awards are designed to provide knowledge and skills
for people in employment or those seeking employment and those who wish to progress to further study. Group
awards are closely related to National Occupational Standards.
» National Progression Awards (NPAs) (SCQF Levels 3 to 6) are designed to develop and assess a defined set of
skills and knowledge in specialist vocational areas. They are linked to National Occupational Standards. National
Progression Awards range from Access 2 to Higher. They are mainly used by colleges for short courses of study, for
those already in work and on part-time courses or return to work courses for the unemployed.
» National Occupational Standards (NOS) specify the standards of performance that people are expected to achieve
in their work and the knowledge and skills they require to perform their role effectively. NOS identify the main
roles and responsibilities within a defined occupational area, they reflect best practice and describe what is
required for successful performance. Industry and employers develop NOS under the auspices of Sector Skills
Councils (SSCs). SSCs are independent, employer-led, UK-wide organisations in the relevant sector. There are
currently 21 SSCs covering 80% of the UK economy. Whilst the majority of National Occupational Standards are
developed via a Skills Sector Council, some are developed by a standards-setting body or sector body (SSB). SSBs
can be professional organisations which represent a profession or industry and they can be contracted to develop NOS.
» Core Skills are the essential skills that people need in education, training, work and life. The core skills are often
integral to National Units and National Courses but can be studied as units in their own right. The Core Skills are:
communication, numeracy, problem solving, information technology and working with others. Everyone who
receives SQA qualifications automatically gets a Core Skills Profile – a listing of all the Core Skills they have
achieved – on their Scottish Qualifications Certificate.
